His friend James Barnes had to take his place and fight Red Skull, the most dangerous enemy of Captain America. In order to save US citizens he had to crash Shmidt's plane with an atomic bomb aboard. He woke up in early 2010s just to find out that his friend was alive and collaborated with Hydra.
